Thank you for your interest in remembering HIAS Foundation in your estate plans. It is through the support of farsighted individuals like you that the HIAS Foundation can ensure that we will always be there from generation to generation, protecting refugees whose lives are in danger for being who they are, and helping them build new lives in safety and freedom.

Q: If I choose to leave a bequest in my will or through my revocable living trust to the HIAS Foundation, do I have to specify an exact amount?

A: No. While you may of course make a specific bequest to the HIAS Foundation in your will or through your revocable living trust in a specified sum, you may also choose to leave the HIAS Foundation a percentage of your estate or trust.

Q: What language should I use in my will or trust to make provisions for the HIAS Foundation?

I. For a specific bequest – I hereby give, devise, and bequeath unto the HIAS Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, Tax I.D. No. 87-4477821, having its principal offices at 1300 Spring Street, Suite 500, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20910, the sum of $_____ to be used for its general charitable purposes.

II. For a residuary bequest – I hereby give, devise, and bequeath %_____ of my residuary estate to the HIAS Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, Tax I.D. No. 87-4477821, having its principal offices at 1300 Spring Street, Suite 500, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20910, to be used for its general charitable purposes.

III. For a designated bequest – I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to the HIAS Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, Tax I.D. No. 87-4477821, having its principal offices at 1300 Spring Street, Suite 500, Silver Spring, MD 20910, [the sum of $_____) [or] ( %_____ of my residuary estate) to be used by it for [STATE PURPOSE OR PROGRAM]. In the event the purpose for which this bequest has been designated or restricted can no longer be accomplished, I direct that it be used by HIAS Foundation for such charitable purposes as it shall determine and which to the extent practicable may be aligned with my initial intentions.
